| PHREAKING
was [or, still is] the art of hacking telephones. Everything about the
telephone, from the line it connects to, to the telco that owns that line,
and the CO [Central Office] that runs it.
Much
of phreaking involved the use of 'boxes' [glorified tone emulators, etc]
with which to 'copy' and 're-transmit' tones and pulses into the phone
line. Through proper use of the right box, a Pheaker could jack in to the
nearest trunk, make a free phone call, or bypass the main CO buildings
all the way to another country's CO.
Technological
advancements in Telco Security has made many 'boxes' obsolete, as well
as some of the coolest phreak tricks that could be made by a newbie on
his local payphone.
